The First Day

Teach your eyes to see beauty,
then there is no need for positive thinking.

She wakes up this morning knowing that this is the first day of her own entire life; knowing that she has been reborn. She is still wearing the same body, waking up to the same house, but she is not the same. She smiles at that thought as she breathes in that first sip of air.

She feels like she is five again, ready to go out and play, excited to face the world as her candy store complete with an amusement park inside.

And just like a child she doesn’t hesitate. She skips her way to the bathroom, sings Christmas songs in the shower, dances while getting ready. She picks out her outfit, shoes and accessories just like a child picking out her super hero costumes – whatever makes her feel good. She puts on her make up, not because she wants to conceal something, but because it is fun. It is like playing with colors. And when it comes to clean up the room, she does it Mary Poppins style, with a lot of singing, snapping and magic.

She opens her refrigerator, takes out a small carton of Ultra Milk, takes a sip and says “Here comes the Ultra Girl! Ready to explore the world!”

“Good morning sky, do you miss me this morning?” She talks to everything she encounters, her room, her car, a random plant, even bugs on the window. And they seem to speak back to her. Not quite sure how.

She smiles to strangers and waves to people on a bus. The traffic does not seem to bother her; she’s busy exploring the world from her car. She is amazed by the leaves that are dancing happily with the wind. She wants to do that. She reads the signs behind all the metromini in front of her and finds them amusing. She laughs so hard. She makes games out of car’s plate numbers. She thinks about the man who’s pushing the garbage wagon, admiring his persistence and dedication. She wishes to have that too.

She looks at the horizon, inhaling the whole city of Jakarta into her heart. While there are traffic, pollution, corruption and heat surrounding her, she sees a certain beauty in the midst of it all. A beauty that only her eyes can see; eyes of a child.

Her friend asks her, “What makes you so positive?”. She looks at her friend with a smile, “I don’t think I’m neither positive nor negative. I’m just lent a child’s eyes today and whoa… I know this world is the same world, but it looks very different. I guess this is what being in love is like.”

“Are you in love?”
“Guess I am.”
“With who?”
“No one in particular. Think it’s the best kind of love. When you’re in love with no particular reasons.”
“You’re just making this stuff up, right?”

“The eyes don’t lie. But then the eyes only see what you choose to see. I see how my nephew stare at the world and I want it. It’s funny how God grants your wishes. I ask for wisdom, patience and courage and He gives me eyes of a child.”

Then a song plays on the radio. “I loveeeeee this song. Sing it with me. It’s a beautiful life, oh oh oh oh, It’s a beautiful life, oh oh oh oh.” Her eyes light up even brighter.

Said the night wind to the little lamb.
Do you see what I see?
