What Does Culture Have to Do With Me?

August 20th, 2010 § 0 comments

I learn from one of my favorite person on earth, my favorite definition of “culture” so far.

Culture is a pattern of thoughts and behaviors, he says. I am liking it.

When I was learning about Indonesian culture, I started asking about my own culture. What’s my culture. What’s the pattern of my thoughts and behaviors?

Nice.

So, how do I think? What do I think about? What are my thoughts mostly about? Then how do I behave? What do I react to? What are my responses to situations and behaviors? What triggers my behaviors?

Oh my God! So many questions that I have not asked before! Wow!

Then I end it with: Is it serving me? Am I happy with it?

Just like Indonesian Culture. What is it about us? What makes us ‘us’? When we understand how we think and behave, then we have the awareness to change it if it doesn’t serve us anymore.

Thank you for the lesson :)
